Family Matters offers support to families at risk of losing their housing because of issues like poverty, debt, illness, unemployment, violence, financial problems, relationship breakdown or other stressful events.
There are only eight Family Matters sites in Australia – one in each state and territory. Anglicare partners with Centrelink to deliver Family Matters in Tasmania. Family Matters is available to adults with dependent children who live in the Launceston suburbs with postcodes 7248, 7249, 7250.
This August, the Family Matters program will celebrate its 10th birthday.
“This is a very effective program,” said Anglicare’s Manager of Children, Families and Community Services, Paul Mallett. “Families report benefits such as improved relationships and health, and a reduction in stress about loss of accommodation. One of the best things is that children do not experience the dislocation from schools and friends that happens when families lose housing”.
“One of the features of Family Matters is that staff work holistically with families,” said Paul. “It is early intervention, rather than crisis intervention”. In the past year, Family Matters has assisted more than 50 families. Each of these ‘at risk’ families was able to retain housing after receiving support from the program.
