Tasmania's Housing Crisis
Tasmania is in the grip of an affordable housing crisis. Too many people are unable to afford a roof over their heads. And if they have a roof, they often have so little money left over after paying their rent that they can’t afford food, transport and heating.

A lack of adequate housing intersects with so many other issues: poverty, family breakdown, alcohol, drug and gambling addictions, disengagement by young people from their school and their community, disability, mental illness and unemployment. Housing is the foundation from which a person becomes part of a community, finds paid and volunteer work, raises a family and builds an abundant and meaningful life for themselves.

Yet in the wake of the housing boom, adequate, affordable, appropriate housing is increasingly out of reach for many Tasmanians.

Because of the scale of this issue, Anglicare has chosen to devote considerable resources into finding ways to beat the housing crisis.

These ways include:

  • Research into housing and issues related to housing
  • The provision of services to support Tasmanians looking for housing
  • Campaigning and Advocacy for the right to shelter and for greater government investment in affordable housing
  • Stories from the waiting list, a photographic exhibition based on the experiences of people on the public housing waiting list
