Financial Counselling provides information and support to people experiencing financial problems.

A financial counsellor can:

  • make sure you are receiving all your income entitlements
  • help you work out a budget for your family income and expenditure
  • help you to prioritise your bills and debts
  • give you information about consumer protection and your legal obligations
  • help you make an informed decision about which option is the best one for you (such as reorganising your credit repayments, bankruptcy or court proceedings)
  • negotiate with creditors on your behalf, by phone, letter or in person
  • help you with budgeting both day-to-day expenditure and debt repayment

Financial Counselling is not a crisis service.

Is there a cost? No.

Financial Counselling is funded by the Commonwealth Financial Counselling Program through the Department of Families, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs, and the Community Support Levy (through Break Even).
