History of The Social Action and Research Centre Print E-mail
The Social Action and Research Centre (SARC) was established in 1995 to support Anglicare’s mission to achieve social justice and provide the opportunity for people who are experiencing disadvantage to raise their concerns in the public arena. SARC engages in a mix of research, policy development, social action and advocacy and works with low income Tasmanians to identify and publicise the structural barriers that impact on their lives. It has produced a number of substantial research reports, run campaigns on priority issues and regularly prepares submissions to Parliamentary and Departmental inquiries. It is unique in Tasmania in being the only non government organisation to commit significant resources to social research and activism alongside direct service delivery.

Current Research
SARC conducts research in order to understand the impact of poverty and inequality and to identify what change is needed. SARC's research forms the basis of Anglicare's recommendations for policy changes.

SARC’s current priorities include

  • affordable housing
  • the income support system
  • oral health
  • electricity affordability
  • food insecurity
  • the State concessions system
  • the issues being faced by low income earners with disabilities.
