A welcome return for TazKids camps

Anglicare’s TazKids camps are back on our events calendar.

“Awesome” was the word used most often by happy campers and Anglicare staff volunteers to describe their experiences at Ulverstone and Hobart in the school holidays. The camps give children who have a parent or guardian impacted by mental health issues a fun, rewarding break from the day-to-day.

TazKids coordinator Glenn O’Neill says that the camp program had been put on hold due to the coronavirus situation, and the return versions were smaller and shorter than usual.

“Despite this, the camps were some of the best I’ve attended in the 10 years they’ve been running,” he said. “We had small groups of children aged 7 – 15 and they were a very enthusiastic bunch. After being cooped up at home during self-isolation, they were itching to get out and about and try new things and their parents were really excited for them, too.

“There were team-building activities, a flying fox, beach walks, archery and mini golf in the North West and down south we had rock climbing and a giant swing – it was all go!”

The children reported that they felt happier and less lonely at camp; that they found it easier to make friends and felt better about themselves, overall.

TazKids is a program funded through the Tasmanian Government’s Strong Families Safe Kids program.  It has supported more than 400 Tasmanian families via camps for this age group and older teenagers, clubs that are based in schools and community settings, and family days.

The next camps will be held over three days in the October school holidays and it’s hoped that they will be able to accommodate the usual numbers of between 20 and 25 children. Places are usually limited, but don’t hesitate to give Anglicare a call on 1800 242 232 if you’re interested in a TazKids experience for a child you care about.

We have a suite of services that support Tasmanian children, young people and families experiencing challenges with mental health. Please contact us to find out how our free, statewide service can support you.
