A deliciously sweet winter treat

June 10, 2021
Eveline House Golden Syrup Dumplings

When the young people living at Eveline House in Devonport come together for a shared meal in the colder months, they love to see Golden Syrup Dumplings on the menu.

Although it’s best seen as an occasional treat, what’s not to love about this old–fashioned favourite?

Anglicare staff double the recipe and then it’s into the slow cooker to set and forget. How simple. Why not try the recipe below and let us know what you think?

Prep time: 20 minutes
Cooking time: 2 hours
Servings: 5-6 people

Ingredients
1 1/2 cup self-raising flour
30g butter, softened
1/3 cup milk
1/3 cup golden syrup

Sauce
2 cups boiling water
3/4 cup golden syrup
1/2 cup brown sugar
50g butter, melted

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, mix the flour and butter until it resembles breadcrumbs.
  2. Make a well in the centre and add the milk and golden syrup. Mix until well combined.
  3. Roll the mixture into roughly 9-18 balls (~1 tbsp each).
  4. In a slow cooker, mix the golden syrup, butter, brown sugar, and boiling water.
  5. Add the dumplings one by one.
  6. Cook on high for 60-90 minutes or until the dumplings are cooked
  7. Serve and enjoy.
