Disability Support Worker Traineeship

We have some traineeships available to those living in the Smithton and surrounds area to work with our Acquired Injury Support Service clients in North West Tasmania.

The traineeship role is a permanent part-time position in which you will be required to work a minimum of 15 hours a week.  You must be willing and available to work a variety of shift times.

You will be provided with guidance and support to complete the requirements of the qualification.

The traineeship will suit people who have just finished school or are looking for a new career.

What does a support worker do?

The day-to-day job of a support worker is built around the needs of the person you are supporting.  It is full of variety and can include helping them to carry out daily tasks such as:

  • personal care (showering, grooming and dressing)
  • medication administration
  • meal preparation
  • manual handling
  • transport
  • purchases
  • record keeping and reporting.

It can also include supporting a person to stay connected with their friends, family and the community, learn new skills or pursue their personal interests and hobbies.

The range of shifts that may be required to work are:

  • 8am – 2pm
  • 7am – 10pm
  • 2pm – 10pm
  • 6pm – 7pm
  • 9pm – 10pm
  • 10pm – 6am (sleepover shift)
  • 6am – 8am

How does the traineeship work?

If you are offered a traineeship, you will be enrolled in the Certificate III Individual Support (Disability) course with Avidity Tasmania in partnership with Mas National over 12 months.

The course requires approximately 20 hours of study per week and will require 120 hours of work placement which will be paid as part of your part-time position.

The course consists of 15 units, 9 core units and 6 elective units. The core units include:

  • Provide individualised support
  • Facilitate the empowerment of people receiving support
  • Support independence and wellbeing
  • Recognise healthy body systems
  • Communicate and work in health or community services
  • Work with diverse people
  • Work legally and ethically
  • Apply basic principles and practices of infection prevention and control
  • Follow safe work practices for direct client care

What are the minimum requirements?

All Anglicare employees must be willing to gain the following before starting the position:

  • Australian Residency status or valid Australian working rights
  • Provisional or full Australian Driver’s Licence and an insured, reliable motor vehicle
  • Tasmanian Working with Vulnerable People registration
  • National Police Check (Working with Vulnerable People registration)
