Forgotten families: raising children with disabilities in Tasmania

Anglicare Tasmania's Social Action and Research Centre, SARC

Having a child with disability can be a trigger for family poverty. This 2007 research report documents the extra costs of disability and the impact of barriers to employment and periods on government benefits. The support system for families of children with disabilities in Tasmania is fragmented. While the research confirms the effectiveness of early intervention, Tasmania lacks a comprehensive framework and strategy. Parents interviewed recommended a single access point for services, and emphasised the need for adequate incomes, good quality health services, access to education and affordable housing.
