Submission in response to ‘Breaking the Cycle: Tasmania Corrections Plan 2010-2020’

Social Action and Research Centre Submission

Anglicare’s focus in this submission is on sentencing, and particularly the development of options designed to divert particular groups away from custodial sentences. Anglicare is concerned that funding constraints may be compromising the best interests of clients in Court Mandated Diversion programs and calls for a cultural change in the criminal justice system. The submission also recommends a diversionary program for offenders whose crime is linked to problem gambling and an ongoing education program for all people employed in the corrections system dealing with the treatment of mental health and substance abuse needs among offenders.
