Taking heart
August 3, 2026
Anglicare is a proud supporter of Brain Injury Awareness Week, which will be held around Tasmania between 17-21 August.
The Brain Injury Association of Tasmania has gathered 7,700 hand-crafted hearts to make powerful art installation that will be unveiled at the official launch of Brain Injury Awareness Week at the Moonah Arts Centre on Tuesday 18 August.
The hearts represent the estimated number of people impacted by brain injury in Tasmania each year. BIAT says the number of people is probably much higher.
Brain Injury Awareness Week aims to foster awareness of the prevalence and diversity of brain injuries and the support that’s available for impacted people and their family and friends.
After the launch, the hearts will be shared with people who have a brain injury as a token of the community’s support.
A learning opportunity for everyone
Anglicare Tasmania operates an Acquired Injury Support Service (AISS) that cares for Tasmanians at all stages of life.
Some care is delivered in partnership with the Motor Accidents Insurance Board (MAIB) at residential facilities in Ulverstone, Kings Meadows and Hobart’s northern suburbs. In less complex cases, we provide care in community settings, including private homes.
“We pride ourselves on providing specialised, high-quality support for people living with an acquired brain injury or spinal cord injuries,” explains General Manager Acquired Injury Support Services, Liz Leslie.
“All of our team members complete the Traumatic Brain Injury course that is offered for free and online through the University of Tasmania.
“It offers valuable, practical insight into living with an acquired brain injury, and equips our team to deliver effective, person-centred care. I encourage anyone with an interest in brain health to book in to this course – it’s excellent,” she said.
