The power of belonging
October 2, 2026
Anglicare is marking Mental Health Week (3-11 October) by sharing information about Curraghmore, a supported independent living program for people experiencing mental health challenges located in Devonport.
While the value of stable and secure accommodation should never be under-estimated, the people who live at Curraghmore, experience much more than simply a place to live. They join a supportive community where they can build their independence, gain confidence and work towards recovery at their own pace.
According to Program Manager Jade, the program is underpinned by the understanding that recovery and wellbeing look different for everyone.
“Our role is to provide individualised supports and a home-like environment where people can form meaningful connections and work towards their goals at their own pace,” she said.
“At Curraghmore, we create opportunities for residents to learn, grow and be involved in everyday life. Whether it’s developing cooking skills, connecting with nature in the community garden or simply spending time with others, we know the small things can make a big difference.”
Building friendships
Curraghmore’s therapeutic gardening program has become a favourite for many residents. It provides an opportunity to enjoy the outdoors and learn new skills. Residents also take part in regular cooking classes and enjoy preparing meals together. These activities create opportunities for residents to connect with one another and build friendships.
A calming, safe space
Dedicated spaces support wellbeing and comfort. A sensory room (pictured above) provides a calming environment where residents can self-regulate, reduce stress and take time for themselves. Designed to support emotional wellbeing, the room offers people a safe place to reset and recharge.
“More recently we installed a hydrotherapy spa, where residents can experience the benefits of hydrotherapy as part of their wellbeing strategies and self-care,” said Jade. “The spa supports people to take time for themselves, manage stress and focus on their physical and mental wellbeing.”
“A blessing”
“What makes Curraghmore special isn’t just the activities or facilities. It’s the sense that we’re building a community in which people feel safe, accepted and respected,” Jade said.
It’s a blessing to see people grow and thrive. It’s a special feeling to know we’re able to make a difference in someone’s life and support them to achieve things they may not have thought possible.
Residents were invited to share their thoughts about living at Curraghmore:

Avery* said:
“If I wasn’t here, I wouldn’t know where I’d be. I know I’m safe and supported here at Curraghmore.”
Casey* reflected on the impact Curraghmore has had on their life:
“Coming to Curraghmore really helped me out of a bad place. There is so much space, so many things to do and I enjoy activities like the cooking class. If it wasn’t for Curraghmore, I don’t think I would still be here.”
*We’ve changed residents’ names to protect their privacy. Thank you to everyone who shared their thoughts with us.
