Y2I students help to ‘light it up purple’

August 12, 2026

This International Youth Day we’d like to shine a light on the Youth2Independence (Y2I) program that Anglicare runs in Hobart, Launceston and Devonport.

The Y2I program combines secure and stable housing with wrap-around supports that prepare young people in the 16-24 age group for a successful transition to independent living.

The program also encourages students to become active in their local communities and to take an interest in social justice issues.

Last week, six students from Trinity Hill in North Hobart participated in the Light It Up Purple walk as part of Homelessness Week. The group departed Trinity at dusk and walked through Elizabeth Street Mall, where the trees were illuminated purple, before continuing to Salamanca Place.

They then walked back via Franklin Square to view the purple-lit fountain before stopping at Anglicare Tasmania’s head office, also illuminated in support of Homelessness Week, and returning to Trinity.

Anglicare Youth Development Coach Taryn said the students were very engaged with the issue of homelessness in Hobart.

“We had some very meaningful conversations, especially when we passed some people sleeping rough,” she said.

“We talked about how severe mental illness can make it difficult for some people to access or maintain accommodation, highlighting that homelessness is often far more complex than simply lacking housing.

“Our students reflected on how fortunate they were to have safe and secure accommodation, and they expressed an interest in learning more about the intersection between homelessness and mental ill-health.

“The walk was really valuable in helping us all to challenge common misconceptions and develop empathy for homeless Tasmanians.”

A group of students from Y2I facility Thyne House participated in a similar event in Launceston.
