Anglicare outlines its Budget priorities

January 21, 2025

Anglicare Tasmania’s submission to the 2025-26 State Budget outlines the urgent need for more affordable and secure housing as well as sustainably-funded community services.

Economist Mary Bennett, coordinator of Anglicare’s Social Action and Research Centre, said a lack of affordable housing is affecting a wide range of Tasmanians across all life stages.

“This is a key barrier to many Tasmanians achieving their goals and living life to the full,” she said. “Our frontline team members are seeing families struggling with the cost of living; women and children trying to escape domestic violence; older people who can’t find appropriate accommodation in their local community and people who live with chronic health conditions, addictions and other challenges.

“Increasing housing supply by building new social housing is essential to achieving the goals of the Tasmanian Housing Strategy. We also call on Government to increase funding to the supported residential facilities where more than 400 vulnerable Tasmanians currently live.”

Mary said it was equally critical that Tasmanians can access well-funded and targeted community and health services, now and into the future as demand is projected to grow.

“Anglicare calls on the State Government to implement the recommendations of the 2024 Independent Review of Tasmania’s Finances, in order to establish a sustainable revenue base is fair and equitable,” she said.

“The action the Government takes today will create a brighter future for Tasmanians now and for generations to come,” said Mary. “We welcome the opportunity to share our knowledge and insights with Government as part of this Budget consultation process.”
