Jennifer’s journey
May 15, 2026
Anglicare team member Jennifer shares her personal journey through the HIPPY program to mark National Families Week (11-17 May).
HIPPY (Home Interaction Program for Parents and Youngsters) is a free, home-based school readiness program that Anglicare delivers in and around Launceston, including the Tamar Valley.
Pre-school aged children participate in fun-filled learning activities that are directed by their parent/caregiver. Each family is supported by a team of paid tutors who have previously gone through the two-year program.
Jennifer lives with her five children in Launceston. She describes her personal journey from HIPPY parent to HIPPY tutor as life-changing.
“What immediately stood out to me about HIPPY was how inclusive and supportive the environment was,” she said. “It allowed me to contribute more wholeheartedly to my family while also connecting with other families and learning from the people around me. My children loved the activities that we did together and were also able to see me develop into a stronger and more confident woman.”
At this time Jennifer was also studying, graduating from the University of Tasmania in 2023.
“The most difficult part of that journey was navigating major life changes at the same time — losing my father, buying my first home and graduating without him there to see it. That was incredibly hard but those experiences also taught me resilience,” she said. “If I can manage all of that while continuing to move forward, then I truly believe there is hope for anyone who feels like their plate is already full.”
Jennifer had stayed in contact with HIPPY coordinator Aparna over the years. When she heard the program was looking for a tutor for 2026, she jumped at the opportunity to give back to her local community.
Today, she works with 17 families and averages around 30 hours’ work a fortnight. The flexibility of the work hours suits family life perfectly, especially with school-aged children.
“My aim is to support families by being patient, understanding and accommodating,” she said. “I enjoy sharing guidance and encouragement – and a laugh when it’s needed. I love talking about how much HIPPY has positively shaped my own life and what I’ve been able to accomplish over the years.”
Jennifer has also set herself a new goal, to continue building her career and eventually move further into Psychology:
HIPPY has a way of helping people discover strengths and passions within themselves that they may never have realised were there.
