Supported Youth Program (SYP)

Helping young people feel safer, more connected and hopeful about their future.

The Supported Youth Program (SYP) supports young people aged 10 to 18 who live in the North and North West of Tasmania. We help young people who are having a tough time at home, school or with friends.

We can support young people to:

    • build healthier relationships
    • stay engaged with school, training, or work
    • take care of their health
  • talk about their living situation and what feels safe for them

Our aim is to help the young person feel safer, more connected, and feel better about their future.

Our SYP support worker will listen to what matters to the young person.  We help them speak up about what’s important and connect them with services, community groups, and activities that support their health, wellbeing and learning.

Who is the program for?

The SYP program works with young people who may be facing:

  • an unstable home environment
  • disengagement from school
  • experimenting with alcohol or other drugs
  • trouble fitting in socially
  • being at risk of Child Protection or Youth Justice involvement

How does the program work?

Each young person is assessed and supported using an approach based on attachment and trauma theory.  This means we understand how pas experiences can affect how a young person feels and behaves.

We will work with each young person to create a long-term support plan that suits their age, needs, and life situation.

Simon’s story

At school I was being bullied and kept getting into fights. I’d also had some run-ins with the police and was told I’d end up locked up if things didn’t change.

At first I couldn’t talk about what had been going on at home. I didn’t know how to explain how I felt. But after a while I started to open up a bit about what had happened to me. That was a year ago.

I’ve learned some ways to stop myself from getting into fights when I get angry or frustrated. I’m getting on better with my mum too.

Things have changed a lot and I’m feeling positive about the future.
