Community partnerships are key

Anglicare operates the statewide Housing Connect Front Door service. As the name suggests, the Front Door is the entry point for housing assistance in Tasmania.
It can also link people with other supports that help them improve other areas of their life such as their career prospects, parenting, managing their finances and developing positive mental health.
With the State in the grip of a housing crisis and record low vacancy rates in the private rental market, keeping hold of a tenancy can be challenging for many Tasmanians.
Anglicare’s Senior Connections Manager Sarah Weist has been encouraging local real estate agents and the Real Estate Institute of Tasmania to refer people to the Front Door rather than simply issuing them with a ‘Notice to Vacate’.
“33% of people presenting to the Housing Connect Front Door in the North West are doing so because they are experiencing crisis in their private tenancies,” Sarah explained.
“Real estate agents weren’t aware that we can assist people with referrals and support across other aspects of their lives that will help them to stay in their homes. They were very receptive and keen to find out more.”
Sarah said life was also difficult for excellent tenants who need to re-locate because a property is no longer available.
“86-year-old veteran David faced this daunting situation. He was supported by the Front Door, the RSL and a real estate agency to find accommodation in his local community. David received a warm welcome from his fellow residents and after just 7 weeks, he says it feels like home,” she said.
