High demand for alcohol and other drug services

Anglicare Tasmania supports the call by the Alcohol, Tobacco and other Drugs Council (ATDC) for greater investment in local services for people seeking support related to alcohol and other drug (AOD) use.

In a media release shared today, the ATDC said there was a shrinking availability of AOD services, particularly in regional Tasmania.

Anglicare’s General Manager – Housing & Community Services Noel Mundy said there was unprecedented high demand for Anglicare’s Drug and Alcohol Treatment Service (ADATS)

“ADATS is an early intervention service that features tailored support for any Tasmanian aged over 14 who is experiencing negative impacts from the use of alcohol and/or other drugs – including tobacco and vaping,” said Noel.

“We recently experienced a waitlist for this service – particularly in the South of the State – but our team worked hard to connect people with supports as quickly as possible and we are again open for referrals,” said Noel.

“We know that this program delivers life-changing results. It’s very important that all Tasmanians can access prevention, treatment and support services when they need them.”

ATDC CEO Dr Jackie Hallam said the rates of use of alcohol and other drugs in Tasmania were above the national average, and the cost to the health system and the wider community was significant.

“Research shows that evidence-based alcohol and other drug treatment, support and education lowers harm across the community, and helps people to be healthier and connected” she said.

“These services are doing the heavy lifting in our communities and need urgent support.”

Anglicare offers a range of AOD programs delivering free and confidential support.

“We encourage anyone needing support, either for themselves or a loved one, to contact our, statewide Alcohol and other Drug Helpline,” Noel said. “Ring us on 1800 161 266 between 9am – 5pm, Monday to Friday and you will reach a counsellor who can provide you with support, information and referrals to other services.

Another free counselling option is our goal-focused SMART Recovery program which is held face-to-face in the South and across the state online. Smart Recovery is taking new enrolments from people who are experiencing negative impacts from the use of alcohol or other drugs. “We also have a Family Support Service operating in the North and North West out of our Burnie, Devonport and Launceston offices. This is for anyone affected by a family member’s alcohol or other drug use.”
