Widening horizons
August 7, 2024Jonas is loving life at the Youth2Independence (Y2I) complex Anglicare manages on behalf of Homes Tasmania in Campbell Street, Hobart.
The 21-year-old moved into Campbell Street six months ago after life at the sharehouse he was staying in became too chaotic.
“It’s perfect here, I have my own space,” he said. “It’s in the middle of town so I’m walking everywhere instead of driving my Falcon, so my petrol costs have gone from $70 a week down to $30.”
He enjoys having the option of being self-sufficient in his own unit or getting together with other young people who live at Campbell Street and making use of the communal kitchen, games room and gym.
Jonas is looking forward to his first trip outside Australia soon.
He will travel to San Diego and Los Angeles as part of his job as a videographer for a gaming company.
“After completing college I taught myself how to edit content for YouTube and then learnt how to edit animated videos,” he said. “Luckily the internet is really good here as I work odd hours!”
The Anglicare team members who work at Campbell Street and other Y2I facilities in North Hobart, Launceston and Devonport guide the young people in their care to identify their goals and aspirations and acquire the skills they need to be active citizens in their community.
Jonas is grateful for this support:
“I’ve received it in spades, and I feel that it’s setting me up for the next stage of my life, to live independently.”
Jonas shared his story with Minister for Housing and Planning Felix Ellis and Parliamentary Secretary for Housing and Planning Simon Behrakis when they visited the Y2I facility during Homelessness Week.
