Hope for the future

Youth2Independence facilities provide young people with a safe and caring home – and hope for a rewarding future.

Anglicare manages four Youth2Independence (Y2I) facilities around the State: Trinity Hill and Campbell Street in Hobart, Thyne House in Launceston and Eveline House in Devonport with the support of Homes Tasmania.

Anglicare’s Manager Youth2Independence Rebekka Gale explains that the program offers housing and wrap-around supports for young people aged 16-24 who may be experiencing or are at risk of homelessness.

The Y2I  program provides young people with a safe space to call home. Each unit is completely self-contained with its own kitchen and bathroom. Students also have access to common rooms, gym facilities, study zones and gardens. We also have some rooms available that are suitable for NDIS participants,” she said.

The wrap-around supports that we provide have the potential to be life-changing. We use what is called an ‘Advantaged Thinking’ approach to tailor a program to each student’s abilities, needs and aspirations; to focus on their strengths and talents and develop their resilience.

“We also have a strong partnership with TasTAFE. Their teachers come on site to support each student to undertake the Certificate 1 in Developing Independence and map out future education and employment pathways.

“Partnerships with local employers and community groups ensure the students become ready for employment and becoming active citizens in their local communities.

“While it can be sad to see a student leave us after the two-year term, we are incredibly proud of them and their achievements and know they have the skills to move on to the next stage of their lives.”

Anglicare hosts national gathering of Youth Foyers

Anglicare’s Y2I facilities are aligned with the Foyer Foundation. There are 16 youth facilities operating around the country under the Foyer Foundation banner, including Trinity Hill, Eveline House and Thyne House. The Campbell Street facility, which opened in December last year, has started this accreditation journey.

Each year the Foyers come together to share ideas that will improve outcomes for young people experiencing or at risk of homelessness.

This year’s event was hosted by Anglicare Tasmania.  Anglicare students (pictured above at Trinity Hill from left to right) Maddie, Ebony, Jonas and Mahalia shared their stories with participants and led tours through their homes.

Do you know or support a young person at risk of homelessness?

There are currently some vacancies in the Y2I program.

If you are the parent, teacher, friend or employer of a young person facing homelessness, the Youth2Independence program may be a good fit for them.  Check this link to check eligibility requirements and then contact Housing Connect to discuss an application.
