Residential programs unlock people’s potential

October 11, 2024

Anglicare offers tailored, residential-based care for Tasmanians requiring intensive support to build their mental health and unlock their potential.

Home-like accommodation and non-clinical support is available in Devonport at a facility called Curraghmore, and at Rocherlea in Launceston’s northern suburbs.

“Our team members at both facilities are passionate about offering programs to people within a therapeutic, peaceful setting,” said Anglicare’s Area Manager Community Services (North and North West) Yvette Dawe.

Our Mental Health practitioners support participants to heal, and take their next steps towards transitioning back into the community.”

A Life Skills and Therapeutic Groups Program supports the people who live at the Rocherlea Recovery and Rehabilitation Service to take meaningful steps towards greater independence. Activities incorporate therapeutic, recreational and educational elements to meet the unique needs of each participant. They include mindfulness, art, self-care, a walking group and a gardening group, and sports sessions that are held both on and off site. Group outings include fishing trips, and there are also cultural celebrations such as NAIDOC Week.

Yvette Dawe said:

Our participants are gaining new skills and at the same time, they are reclaiming a sense of purpose, connection and hope for the future.

Meanwhile, a new cooking program at Curraghmore is bringing residents together.

“The residents requested that cooking be added to their activities program,” said Yvette. “We purchased ingredients and cookware using funds donated by Anglicare supporters and the first session was a huge success. We’re confident it will be a permanent addition to the program. Everyone enjoys the cooking itself and then sharing the results together, and it builds their independent living skills.”

Participant Gillian (pictured above) said:  “Everyone is really enjoying the cooking class; it’s great because we all come together.”

The benefits of healthier eating were highlighted at a morning tea to mark Women’s Health Week in early September. Residents shared seasonal fruit and received gift bags full of useful resources. A discussion about how to use the star rating system to make healthier choices followed.
